12:23pm: it's been a while...
it's been a long while since there was any activity over here.  going to attempt to use this to coordinate all things pennsic for the lanai end of camp.

2:03pm: sewing madness update
a & k -

sewing pennsic clothes.  kimono; pants; chemise/shirt; tunic long or short; skirt; cloak.  these are all things that you can make for yourself at my shop at penn.  kristina made a kimono from start to finish in 5 hrs, and that includes learning how to operate a sewing machine and dealing with michelle's dyslexia.  time is running out.  i leave on friday august 4th and the week before that i will be working at penn but might not be the most helpful or friendly as i panic and try to finish my stuff - because nothing is done.  nothing!  aack!  so we need to move on this now.

the steps to making your own garb:
buy fabric; wash & dry fabric to prepare it for sewing; come to the penn shop and cut fabric; sew fabric; apply any finishing details.  this means either one super long day of work [plan several hours to sew each garment] and shopping or two separate days.  here is my schedule for the next while - talk amongst yourselves and let me know when you want to do what.  my work at penn is flexible - i can work mornings, which i prefer, or i can come in in the afternoons or weekends.  i am not able to work any day after 9pm as i get up so stupid early.  this goes for working at penn or shopping, i need to be done and leaving for home by 9pm.  days labled "off" mean i'm not scheduled for work and will probably be going to penn to sew so you should come with me if you can.  **it's not that i don't care, but if you don't talk to me with definate times you're free to shop/sew by this friday 7.21 you will be lowest on my priority list and i won't have time to help you.**

edit 3pm: i am going to jomar fabrics in north phila this week, thursday friday or saturday if you want to go.  i can't go before thursday because i'm broke.

1:01pm: circle skirt pattern
here's a link to a how-to article on circle skirts. her info is easy to follow so go and follow it and have fun and make stuff. http://www.shira.net/make-cskirt.htm

15th June 2006

10:17pm: some rough fabric estimations: based on a roughly XL size, you'll need more or less as your size dictates.  but this way you can start estimating how much fabric you'll need to buy

circle skirt - quite full: 5 yards of 45" fabric; lightweight, drapey fabrics

pants - using www.folkwear.com/caravan.html #119, loose & comfy, farily full: 3 yds of 45" fabric

pants - similar to www.folkwear.com/caravan.html #144, really poofy, nice in a very light weight fabric, 45" fabric: 4 yds

ghawazee coat - similar to http://www.atirasfashions.com/images/NO22A.GIF - 3.5 yds @45"; 3 yds @ 54/60"

blouse, mid thigh, long sleeve, to wear under ghawazee coat or vest: about 2 yards

medieval style
bodice: 1 yd
blouse/short chemise, hip length - add yardage as length increases: 3.5 yds @ 45"; 2 yds @ 60
skirt, ground length: 4.5 yds @ 45"; 3.25 @ 60"

12:45pm: ladies,

well...so much for me updating this page regularly and frequently....

some quick & dirty notes for costuming ideas, places to look for ideas for middle eastern garb. remember: middle ages. that's the key to anything you buy or make. no synthetics - they are not historically accurate, they look like ass at pennsic, and they're hotter than cotton or linnen.

google is your friend. google image search for words you think appropriate: middle eastern; pennsic; medieval; medieval costume; middle eastern clothing; .... be creative and see what you can find.

www.pennsic.net tons of info on all things pennsic, including lots of photos

http://www.ethnicpatterns.com/ has links to patterns from several sources

http://www.atirasfashions.com/pattern_page.html catalog of patterns, many are applicable for pennsic

http://www.artemisimports.com/ catalog of patterns and resources

http://www.alteryears.com/ you get the idea...

fabric & patterns
http://www.joann.com/ visit your local joann to see fabrics and patterns up close and personal, shop there or online. look for "costume" in the pattern books.

***edit/update***
i am using my penn workshop as my sewing headquarters for this summer. any and all are welcome to visit or learn to sew or build stuff. currently i work at penn m-th 11am to 3pm; i am planning to be here more hours to get my work done; i can change my schedule somewhat to accomodate that of others. NOTE: i will NOT be working later than 8pm any day as i get up at 4am.

a trip to purchase fabric at jo-mar fabrics in north philadelphia should happen soon. cheap fabric but the selection is erratic. they are open evenings and weekends. you should come with me. i plan to make ONE trip there this summer, probably the first week of july - depending on how much my car costs to repair and inspect but you don't really need to know that do you?

'nuff said.
Current Mood: not working on pennsic stuff..

22nd May 2006

5:44pm: 1 - oops  about the excessive lj cut on that last entry
2 - are everyone's measurements about the same as last summer?
3 - i am NOT sewing for anyone this year.  i decided to cut the pretense and give up.  i am going to try to finish that backlog of stuff however...
3:12pm: pre-registration and packing list
ladies,

as pennsic draws near, it's time to address some lanai business.  i will post here towards the beginning of each week and won't email everyone individually about this stuff.  everyone is encouraged to post or reply to comments here - just email me for the password.  now, on to business....

financial:
have you all pre-registered? have you made certain that your guests have pre-registered?  one very serious point to consider: we may NOT be able to set up the lanai this year - UNLESS enough "people" are registered with our group [i'm double checking with john to see exactly how many extras we'll need].  as you know we are allotted a certain square footage of space per person who pre-registers.  i pre-reg'ed an extra person to ensure enough land for my big tent [me & carrie stay there, we're both registered] and a portion of the lanai.  this hasn't really been an issue in past years because bryt would go above and beyond the call of duty and would pre-reg enough people to cover our big ass lanai and camping tents.  this year we do not have bryt's company at war, nor do we have her fiscal generosity.  i thought that a lower cost option would be for several people to get together and pre-reg one extra person.

campsite storage - this year we need to rally together to give john money for our part of the camp storage fee.  most of you know first hand just how much stuff we keep at the site and how we coundn't camp comfortably without it.  i dont' know exactly what the yearly fee for our shed is, but i know it's a lot of money.  again, bryt has been uber generous and not asked us to pay our share.  we now need to pay our fair share.  i'll elaborate more on this another time.

packing:

also - i hope y'all don't mind my trying to take charge of the lanai business. i just think it's useful for someone to try to consolidate our various thoughts and plans for our favorite place; plus i'm always at my computer and can't help being compuslive about this stuff....
